Lauren Katzowitz Shenfield.
Lauren Shenfield’s experience in family,
private, and corporate philanthropy includes numerous family
and private foundations, Exxon Corporation, and the Ford Foundation.
A leading donor advisor and family foundation consultant,
Lauren is the founder and principal of Philanthropy Advisors
and has provided management and consulting services to clients
for over 20 years.
An inaugural member of the National Network
of Consultants to Grantmakers (www.nncg.org),
Lauren served as a director of New York Regional Association
of Grantmakers and Women & Philanthropy. She is also a
member of the Professional Advisory Committees of the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, the Central Park Conservancy and the Beach
Theatre Foundation and is a trustee of the Media & Policy
Center Foundation and The Baron De Hirsch Fund. In addition
to general management, Lauren specializes in helping donors
define and revisit mission and grantmaking strategies in difficult
economic times. She guides clients in creating innovative
grant programs and in evaluating their effectiveness as philanthropists.
A nationally recognized facilitator of family foundation board
retreats, she has worked with more than 30 private philanthropies
to address intergenerational issues, resolve conflict and
develop inspired, strategic grant programs. Among her specialized
services is the training of family foundation directors and
trustees. She serves as an executive coach to family and professional
foundation staff.
Lauren’s is a frequent speaker and
writer about philanthropy. She has been interviewed for The
Journal of Wealth Management, The Chronicle of Philanthropy,
and other professional journals and on-line publications and
was quoted in Moment magazine’s holiday issue
on “The Way Women Give.” The New York Times,
CNN, and Studio 360 interviewed her about a program
she created, Anonymous Was A Woman. A principal contributor
to the Council on Foundation’s Management volume in
the Family Foundation Library series, Lauren has addressed
the Family Office Forum and IMI’s Wealthy Families Forum
on the subject of Engaging in Values-Based Philanthropy. Her
review of Julie Salamon’s Rambam’s Ladder: A Meditation
on Generosity and Why It Is Necessary to Give was published
by the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers.
